In a thoughtful historical essay published on this blog, John Ruddick celebrated the British discovery of Australia. He detailed how Captain Cook, through a mix of science, navigation, and extraordinary luck, laid the foundation for modern Australia -  a nation shaped by Western civilisation, built on exploration, liberty, and law.

“None could have done so much with it as the British,” Ruddick wrote, thanking Captain Cook and placing Australia within a proud tradition stretching back to Rome.

In that same piece, he highlighted the significance of ideas, of intellectual heritage, of the long arc of Western civilisation culminating - quite literally - on these shores.

And yet, in August 2025, that same John Ruddick praised the closure of the Sydney Harbour Bridge to allow a mass pro‑Palestinian march to proceed - a protest movement whose leading organisers have cheered on Hamas, and whose symbols are aligned with the very forces that oppose everything Ruddick once defended: Enlightenment values, classical liberalism, and ordered liberty.

How does a man go from quoting Roman philosophers and honouring Captain Cook... to waving through the disruption of a city in support of ideological chaos?

Strain the System, Break the Nation: Is the Cloward-Piven Strategy in Play?

From immigration policy to identity politics, energy to ideology -  the erosion of Western society is no accident. It’s part of a pattern.

Sometimes, you have to wonder: is all this just incompetence, or something more coordinated? Policies that seem to defy common sense are being rolled out with alarming consistency - not to strengthen the nation, but to fracture it.

One might start by looking at immigration. Not just the numbers, but the nature of it. Instead of families or vulnerable refugees, we’re seeing a steady flow of young, single, fighting-aged men, often from regions with vastly different values, cultures, and religious worldviews. There's no requirement to assimilate. In fact, it's almost as if assimilation is the one thing being actively discouraged.

And when ordinary citizens begin to express discomfort, the response isn’t dialogue ... it’s dismissal. They’re labelled racists, xenophobes, far-right agitators. Their frustration is turned into something sinister. No longer patriots but monsters to be erased....?

In the 1970s, listening to Pirate Radio was more than entertainment -  it was defiance. As modern censorship creeps into every corner of digital life, I find myself wondering: will we need to tune back in?

Not to music over the waves, but to whatever Pirate Radio becomes in our age of tech control.

In the 1970's, Pirate Radio Stations were all the rage. It was seen as a badge of honour to quietly admit to listening to Pirate Radio. As the internet becomes increasingly censored, are we going to turn the clock back to those heady days of defiance and consider buying a shortwave receiver? if not, what will be the modern-day equivalent of Pirate Radio?

My first encounter with Pirate Radio was in New Zealand as a schoolgirl in 1968.

In 2025, we are being told, once again, that it is for our own good.

We are told to obey the experts. To trust the committees. To believe that restrictions are signs of enlightened governance. But history tells another story: one where the language of safety becomes the camouflage of control. Where fear is not conquered but cultivated. And where God is replaced, not with reason, but with rulers.

We have seen governments lock us down, isolate the elderly, muzzle dissent, and silence the young — not with reasoned debate, but with edicts. Under the guise of public safety, we are being reshaped. Social cohesion is no longer built around families, churches, or communities — but around bureaucracies, panels, and platforms.

This is not safety. This is sedation.When Governments Say ‘It’s For Your Own Good. ' rest assured, it is probably not.

Into the Jaws: Faith, Fear, and the Fight to Stay Afloat

The sea doesn’t warn you. It doesn’t care who you are, what rank you hold, or how well you swim. In 1945, Edgar Harrell -  a young Marine aboard the USS Indianapolis -  found himself tossed into an ocean of blood, oil, and sharks.

Five days he floated. No food. No water. Just faith. When I saw the image of that ship heading into the mouth of a great white -  part nightmare, part truth -  I thought of him.

I thought of two boys on surfboards who once saved my life. And I thought of how, in a world gripped by fear, someone must still call out: look at the sky, stay on your back, breathe -  help is coming.

I had never heard of Edgar Harrell. His name, like so many from the past, drifted quietly beneath the surface of history -  until one day, a video clip pulled him into my world.

In it, an elderly man calmly recounts a nightmare: five days adrift in shark-infested waters after the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed on the 30th of July, 1945.

His voice is steady, but the story is harrowing.

After delivering components for the atomic bombs, the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Hundreds of his shipmates were killed ... not by the explosion, but by sharks.

At nine years old, I felt the silence of the lambs,  long before I knew its name.
 
It wasn’t loud or frightening, just an uneasy dis-ease, a quiet knowing that something wasn’t right.
 
My friends, adorned with bangles and beads, were promised princess-like futures, only to vanish into broken promises of child marriages.
 
Too young to question, too trusting to challenge, I shrugged and carried on, believing the world was safe. It all started with a history lesson about Lord Shaftesbury, whose fight for children’s voices clashed with the silence I couldn’t yet name. 
 
So here is my tale today... from a long way away in a land far far away....

There’s a photograph in your mind, faded, perhaps, but alive...a moment from your past that never quite lets go. Maybe it’s the day you first rode a bike, the night you whispered secrets to a friend, or the first time you saw your newborn child. Why do these moments cling, while others vanish without a trace?

What moments shape us, and what will our children and grandchildren hold onto in a noisy world?

That is my question today. What memories are we leaving to our new generation? Lockdowns? Climate Change? Global Warming? Guilt? What have we allowed to happen?

I know a person...  in her older years. She has a smartphone. She knows how to use it, She tries to keep up with the modern world..even when it changes faster than her knees can carry her. She can type faster than me and while she is drop dead gorgeous in my eyes, you can tell she is not 18 anymore. 

She’s not stubborn. She’s not lost in the past.She’s just… older.

And this week, standing at her front door, she was asked to prove how old she was. Yes, by a delivery driver from the local adult beverage shop...... with a bottle of Irish whiskey I had ordered for her. What happened next was shocking. Welcome to E- Australia...
